Sarah & I travelled through China in 2019 and part of our travel itinerary included a 3-night/4-day cruise on the Yangtze River aboard a ship named the Victoria Grace. One evening, the crew treated us with a performance of ‘traditional cultural entertainment’ that included dancing, music, and even some magic and comedy. Our lovable humdrum […]
These photos were shot on the overnight train to Xi’an. This lovely family, with whom we shared our compartment, spent part of the day putting together a puzzle on their bottom bunk.
I shot these in Yangshuo, China while doing some river rafting. This was a very touristy thing to do as I’m sure you can tell from the photos. But it was a lot of fun! There were hundreds of boats on the river. Most of them were of the bamboo raft variety. They each seat […]
In 2019, when Sarah and I were in China, we had the opportunity to visit a tea plantation in Emeishan. Patrick, our guide, drove us to the home of an old high school friend who was the owner of a tea plantation. Upon arriving, we were kitted out with traditional Chinese conical hats, tea baskets […]
These are all from the day I proposed to Sarah. We went horseback riding from Lake Louise up to the Lake Agnes Teahouse and I nervously carried the engagement ring in my pocket all day. In the end, I did not propose at Lake Agnes (too many people and no privacy) and instead proposed to […]
The Historic Village in Tauranga, NZ is a “collection of original and replica buildings from early Tauranga”. It’s a sort of museum for old buildings — similar in concept to Heritage Park here in Calgary except on a much smaller scale and without the re-enactors or key attractions such as a steam locomotive or vintage […]
The highlight of my trip to China last year had to be the night markets. There is just so much to see and photograph. The streets and restaurant patios are filled with interesting people, while every shop is open with something exciting going on out front. There’s plenty of food, music, and all sorts of […]
This photo of a man pruning a topiary is from my first day in China last summer. The area around our hotel in Beijing was pretty nice and I often walked by this topiary on my way to and from the hotel.
Sarah and I spent a day at Ocean Park in Hong Kong. While wandering through the park, we came across a stage performance with dancers dressed in sailor outfits. It looked interesting so I stuck around to watch and take photos. But when they brought out the water guns, I felt like a little kid […]
I came across this man holding a guitar while walking down the street in Emeishan City. He seemed completely out of place and I was hoping he would play something, but sadly, this ‘Guitar Hero’ never played for us.
Sarah and I visited Emeishan City at the base of Mount Emei (aka Emeishan) in August. Mount Emei is one of the Four Sacred Mountains of Buddhism in China. We actually spent a few nights at Baoguo Temple (aka Baoguosi) and spent a day hiking up Mount Emei-–which was like climbing the world’s longest flight […]
When Sarah & I were in Shanghai, we spent the day wandering the Yuyuan Garden and the surrounding Bazaar. I snapped most of these photos as we walked through the streets of the Old City on our way to the Bund.
I tried to capture the steep changes in elevation while climbing the Great Wall of China. It may have been a cloudy day, but the temperature was in excess of 40 °C. Climbing all those stairs was harder than it looks! Incidentally, can you spot the woman doing a handstand?
These were shot wandering the streets of Yangshuo. At night, these very streets transform into a very busy and crowded night market.
After nearly five years, I have finally posted my 1000th photo! I created this blog in July 2015 partly to share my photos, but mostly as a way to record my journey as a photographer for myself. It has been an immensely rewarding process and one I hope will continue for years to come. And […]
Sarah & I spent an afternoon wandering around Ralph Klein Park. Even though Kodak UltraMax film is considered to be ‘consumer’ film, I quite like its color palette. I was happy with the way these turned out.
Sarah & I toured the Summer Palace on our first full day in Beijing, China. It was a spectacular day but Sarah wasn’t too pleased with me by the end. The temperature reached an incredibly hot 40˚C, and not only did I make her climb to the top of Longevity Hill to take some photos, […]
