Havelock North

These are from a photo walk in Havelock North, New Zealand. This photo of a pink building was an absolute nightmare to scan. Getting the colours right was next to impossible. This was one of the images that tipped the scales for me and led me to purchase Negative Lab Pro. I love how someone […]
Flowers #3

I shot these flower photos around the garden of my wife’s parents’ home. I quite liked their garden, but alas, they have recently sold their house and moved. I think I will miss that garden.
Sheep Shearing Competition

When I was last in New Zealand, I attended the Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Show. A&P stands for “agricultural and pastoral”. An A&P show is a country fair and celebrates farming and the agricultural industry. This photo is one of only two I managed to shoot during the sheep shearing competition. The lighting in the […]
Romulus and Remus

I photographed this statue of Romulus and Remus at Hamilton Gardens in New Zealand using a rare film that I purchased prior to my trip: Kodak SO-553 100. Apart from the fact that this “special order” film is numerically consecutive in name to Kodak SO-554 200, the two films are not related. Kodak SO-554 came […]
Santa in Havelock North

This giant Santa statue was photographed outside the New World supermarket in Havelock North, New Zealand. I just love the idea of celebrating Christmas with a summer barbeque in the southern hemisphere — especially when the temperature drops below -20 °C here in Calgary! I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a happy […]
Thursday Doors #2

These doors lead into Napier Prison in New Zealand. The prison is now a museum and one of the bleakest places I’ve ever visited.
Central Hawke’s Bay Museum

These photos were taken outside the Central Hawke’s Bay Museum in Waipawa, NZ. While much of the museum was devoted to the history of settlement in the region, they did have a few old cameras on display — including an Olympus Trip 35. I didn’t have the heart to tell them that the Trip 35 […]
#LoveDowntownTauranga

I snapped this photo along the Strand in downtown Tauranga during a jazz festival. Many people were posing with the mural of the wings and while waiting to snap a photo of my wife, I managed to get this one of a stranger.
Wintergardens Triptych

One of the things I love about half-frame cameras, like the Olympus Pen EED, is the ability to create diptychs and triptychs. It’s a great way to create panoramas or simply to juxtapose two images. I made this triptych of Auckland’s Wintergardens last year when Sarah and I were in New Zealand visiting family. It […]
Thursday Doors

Inspired by Conspicari’s “Thursday Doors” posts on coronet66, I was delighted when I came across these doors on a recent trip to New Zealand. These doors — all from the same street in Napier — are far more interesting than the boring modern doors I often encounter on my photo walks here in Calgary.
Wandering Around Blenheim, NZ

Sarah and I wandered around Blenheim one Sunday afternoon. It was very quiet with almost no one around when I shot these photos.
Walking in Newmarket

I snapped this photo of an elderly couple walking in Newmarket (a suburb of Auckland) on FPP B&W 100 film, which is really just rebranded Orwo UN54.
Auckland

These photos of Auckland were taken in 2018 as Sarah and I walked through downtown and along the waterfront. The big green owl (Ruru Kakotea) is from The Big Hoot, a fundraiser for the Child Cancer Foundation. That year, many painted owls could be found all around Auckland.
My Top 3 Film Cameras of 2022

Taking inspiration from Keith Devereux, I decided to crash the party too. A group of film photography bloggers have all shared a post about the three cameras they used most in 2022. And so, here is my take on that theme. The three cameras mentioned below took centre stage for me and held all my […]
Ollie

This is Ollie. He is my father-in-law’s dog and he followed me around the house as I snapped some photos. I’ve posted photos of Ollie and his good friend Milly before. Milly has since passed away. Ollie misses her.
On the Fence

I was taking photos around Sarah’s parents’ farm when she decided to walk on the fence (which overlooks a steep 50m (150ft) drop. I was grateful this photo turned out because I noticed my QL17 wasn’t giving me accurate meter readings in the fading evening light. I bracketed most of my shots, but I only […]
