I shot these photos in Tiananmen Square. As I stood there snapping photos and taking in the sights, I couldn’t help but think of ‘Tank Man’, the iconic photo taken by Jeff Widener in June 1989 during the Tiananmen Square Protests. While that photo was seen around the world and has come to represent the 1989 pro-democracy protests, few in China have ever seen it. The photos and history of the fight for democratic reform and the ensuing massacre are banned in China – such is the power of censorship.
